Session Abstract

Before the introduction of the Apple II in 1977, computing was a proposition only for those with the time and budget to build something incredible from a pool of poorly-standardized parts: hobbyists and large enterprises. Apple didn't invent computing - but it made it easy and accessible to anybody who wanted, opening the door to the PC revolution.

Consider the parallels to the cloud computing market circa 2013: That same PC revolution is showing signs of stalling out, as the cloud makes new advances in mobility and browser-based computing possible. But the public cloud can be costly, and doesn't always offer the performance, data locality, or certifications that the healthcare and biotechnology industries need. And the private cloud can address these problems, but implementation involves navigating a maze of vendors, APIs, and standards.

What the industry needs is an infrastructure that does for the cloud what the Apple II did for personal computing, where standard parts can be used all together and turned on with the flick of a switch. This concept - the Cloud Computer - won't revolutionize the market - but it will bring it to the next stage of evolution.

In this talk, Nebula CEO Chris C. Kemp will describe the situations where the public cloud isn't meeting the needs of the healthcare industry, why the shift towards big data and mobility mean that it's time for enterprises to retake control of their IT infrastructure, and how the current approach to deploying private cloud has failed.
