But there’s much more, so Tom will provide a quick overview of the SaltStack platform and share a few things you probably don’t know about how SaltStack is used in DevOps organizations today. Tom’s talk will highlight the need for speed and scale in DevOps, put an end to an age-old holy war in configuration management, talk about why we need more lightweight cloud control, outline the benefits of automation glue for all the infrastructure things, and show how test automation can be easier and faster combining Salt, Jenkins, Docker and Git. </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cloud</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/128" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Management</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/agility" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">agility</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/migration" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Migration</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/deployment" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">deployment</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/integration" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">integration;</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">(moderator) Shahed </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Latif </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Partner </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">KPMG</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">*</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-postal field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Postal Address:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">*</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-room field-type-list-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Emerald Ballroom</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-timeslot field-type-datetime field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-single" property="dc:date" datatype="xsd:dateTime" content="2014-06-04T11:50:00-07:00">Wednesday, June 4, 2014 - 11:50</span></div></div></div> Wed, 21 May 2014 23:14:17 +0000 813 at http://cloudslam.org Realizing Multi-Cloud Management and Cloud Marketplace http://cloudslam.org/cloudcomputingconference/realizing-multi-cloud-management-and-cloud-marketplace <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Many enterprises from small business to the largest companies are incrementally moving to a model in which: 1) The business exploits multiple public and private clouds. 2) Use a mix of cloud services that include IaaS, SaaS, web callable APIs and PaaS. 3) View acquiring cloud services to be similar to a commerce experience for physical HW and SW.<br /> The keynote presentation:<br /> 1. It requires physical space, power, network connectivity, cooling and physical security. This critical sustenance is provided by data centers. But there is much more to it than that: the data center will play an increasingly significant role in cloud providers’ and enterprises’ cloud strategies. In this talk, Digital Realty will detail all the levels of data center needs for the cloud.</p> <p>First, he will outline the basic needs of a data center such as power, cooling, connectivity, security, fire protection, and computing and storage equipment (i.e. servers). Bryan will discuss capacity issues that organizations need to consider for their cloud and data center strategy. A common challenge for data center providers is how to balance multiple applications with varying density requirements in a single data center suite in order to ensure that no power is left stranded.</p> <p>Then, Bryan will discuss an organization’s higher-level cloud needs such as proximity to customers, elasticity and the ability to scale anytime and anywhere, being part of the broader cloud ecosystem. For instance, global networked data centers should be able to connect to any cloud provider. As businesses’ data center needs grows from a single rack to a pod to an entire data center, they need consider how their various cloud providers will connect through the network. In addition, latency and location becomes an important factor for enterprise cloud strategies as their business expands.</p> <p>Finally, he will discuss how the data center is only part of the broader cloud ecosystem. The cloud opens up opportunity by broadening what’s possible for businesses. Once businesses have the cloud, they get into some exciting conversations around topics such as networking infrastructure, connectivity, and virtualization capabilities, among others. An opportunity to create these new service offerings has materialized through the realization of the promise of the Industrial Internet – or Internet of Things – which helps manufacturers connect their intelligent machines to gather data and insights that can empower operators and business managers to make smarter, more informed decisions that can save time and money. Taking advantage of secure cloud services, which reduce initial investment costs for OEMs, has provided a jump start for many of them to realize this opportunity.</p> <p>In the case of TempuTech, for example, an OEM of grain processing equipment for manufacturing, incorporating a cloud-based remote monitoring and mobility solution from GE Intelligent Platforms in its grain processors has given them a new revenue stream as they are now able to provide customers with asset monitoring capabilities through a subscription-based cloud service. The cloud-based solution quickly and cost-effectively transforms raw data into actionable information, maximizing operational efficiency, productivity and profitability. Being able to view alarms and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) data on a single screen on a mobile device and having a customized risk index for advanced analytics and predictive detection allows OEMs to contact customers before their process goes down. And further, being able to use fewer experts to monitor and troubleshoot an entire fleet of assets contributes to cost reduction.</p> <p>This on-premise or private cloud is combined with a rugged Machine Data Gateway to collect equipment data from nearly any brand of intelligent control device, which is then buffered to protect against network outages, encrypted and transmitted to and verified by the remote monitoring and mobility server. </p> <p>The speed of deployment using the cloud service allows for quick ROI for the OEM, as new revenue-generating services offset monthly fees. In this case, grain manufacturer customers can benefit quickly as TempuTech’s new service is able to access and provide actionable information about the health of the customers’ grain processing system and deliver it to them in real-time so they can avoid downtime and quality issues. This ability to leverage the cloud to provide virtualized centralization of unlike applications, devices and sensors via a web-based remote monitoring and diagnostic system is improving customer service for the OEM, enhancing their value to the customers while reducing the overall cost of customer service. </p> <p>Steve Pavlosky from GE Intelligent Platforms can describe how the cloud and the advances of the Industrial Internet are sparking these new revenue opportunities for OEMs in industrial and manufacturing operations.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cloud</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/354" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Mobility</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/industrial-internet" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">industrial internet</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/oem" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">OEM</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/manufacturing" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">manufacturing</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Steve</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Pavlosky</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Solutions Ecosystem Leader</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">GE Intelligent Platforms</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Steve Pavlosky has more than 25 years in the Automation industry, having worked in Consulting, Channel Management, Commercial Operations, Sales, and Marketing. But now, there are some ‘blurred lines’ as enterprises and public and private institutions that share common requirements are banding together through a “Community Cloud” model. Aimed at delivering on-demand, non-competitive services, infrastructure and application software, this new and emerging IP operating model is based on a community cloud platform. The results are better operational efficiencies, significantly reduced costs, and a greater ability to innovate and generate new revenues for all community members involved.</p> <p>In this session, Manjula Talreja, VP of Cisco Consulting Services Global Cloud Practice, will further define and discuss the emergence of these new Community Cloud models, pointing to examples of several global university groups who are successfully adopting community cloud initiatives. Talreja will also highlight some of the key operational, delivery, governance, revenue-sharing, ROI — among other — challenges inherent in this new cloud model.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/84" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">analytics</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/115" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Big Data</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/563" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">business agility</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/cisco" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Cisco</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/cisco-consulting-services" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Cisco Consulting Services</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cloud</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/community-cloud" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">community cloud</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/16" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">hybrid cloud</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/next-gen-it" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">next-gen IT</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/it-service" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">IT-as-a-Service</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/72" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">ITaaS</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/21" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">mobile</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/software-service" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Software-as-a-Service</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/15" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Saas</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Manjula</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Talreja</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Vice President, Global Cloud Practice</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Cisco Consulting Services</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Manjula Talreja is a 25-year information technology (IT) industry veteran who has spent the majority of her career at Cisco, where her extensive experience in general management, business strategy consulting, and operations has helped guide teams through many crucial inflection points. In the first world, the mobile industry is growing dramatically with operator capital spending and data consumption increasing at healthy levels. The second world is one with more challenges.  In this world, the reality is that mobile connections are reaching saturation levels, forcing operators to shift their focus to subscriber retention and revenue growth in new areas.  </p> <p>Despite these opposing worlds, we believe that telecom is booming. Even voice.  The fundamental problem, however, is that our thinking about the industry in on the decline. Going forward, we need to   change our view of the industry to focus on how we can capitalize on the opportunities that arise from these disruptions. </p> <p>Today, there is an understanding that the basis of competition has shifted from an industry built around scale and robustness of networks to a model of choice and flexibility of services driven by the consumer. Software providers are even moving away from the services space to look into how services are being delivered to the end user. In order to compete, the telecom core and network will have to become service marketplaces.</p> <p>For telecom operators to continue to flourish in this new environment we will need to rethink how networks are built and used. At Ericsson, we see many potential areas for disruption, the largest being at the heart of the network, 4th Generation IP, Cloud &amp; Service Provider SDN.  From a telecom perspective, we are seeing software eat the network. To leverage this new phenomenon, we must remove the complexity that exists in a traditional IP and service network and make it more accessible to software developers. As a result, the cost basis for delivering services will fundamentally change, allowing scale experimentation for new business models.</p> <p>Companies like Google, for example, have excelled at using a micro-experimentation approach to determine what elements constitute a good service experience and to create new opportunities. Historically, the telco and service provider communities have not followed their lead. If these communities can successfully implement micro-experimentation, they will be able to rapidly discover new types of business models. This transformation is already occurring today, with experimentation happening within the service provider space. To those that are not experimenting, it only looks slow if you’re losing. </p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/telco" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">telco</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cloud</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Vish</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Nandlall</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">CTO</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Ericsson North America</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Dr. Vish Nandlall is Head of Strategy, Marketing and Chief Technology Officer for Ericsson’s North American region. Both were proving slow and expensive to develop and maintain, and the team was spending time and resources on upgrades and maintenance rather than business value.</p> <p>An integration Platform-as-a-Service (iPaaS) offering was used in an initial proof of concept (POC) to connect internal Novartis data with Salesforce.com. The technical approach was to select endpoint interfaces from the iPaaS library and modify them to fit Novartis-specific data mappings. This project took about 25 hours to complete, and saw a 10-fold cost savings over the tools and process they had in place. As a result of this POC, Novartis invested in the iPaaS solution and plans 600-700 integrations, 90% of which are on-premise to on-premise, or A2A, with 10% B2B integration.</p> <p>Novartis subsequently decided to phase out their legacy integration middleware and starting in 2012, began migrating these integrations to the iPaaS. This year they plan to migrate off their second on-premises middleware system to address compliance risks and to match their cloud-enabled enterprise needs in the future. Novartis is also reducing the number of servers dedicated to integration from 28 to 8. They realized that ETL, EDI, application integration, and cloud integration are converging and an iPaaS solution can meet their requirements, now and into the future, quickly and at a low cost. This presentation will examine Novartis’ story.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cloud</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/pharmaceuticals" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">pharmaceuticals</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/131" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">integration</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/enterprise-architecture" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">enterprise architecture</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Thomas</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Barton</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Global Enterprise Architect and Head of Integration Services</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Novartis</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Thomas is a seasoned technology executive with broad-based management experience, leading international teams in Enterprise Architecture consulting, and the real world application of Cloud Computing, Mobility, Middleware Integration, iPaaS, and Business Process Management.
