Ferguson is vice president and chief technology officer for Dell’s Software Group. Dell named Don a Senior Fellow in January 2013, and Don is currently one of only two Dell Senior Fellows. Don also chairs the Pan-Dell CTO Forum. Don is the only person to have been an IBM Fellow, Microsoft Technical Fellow and Dell Senior Fellow. Don leads the architecture, implementation design, technical strategy and innovation for Dell Software Group products and solutions. Don also works with colleagues across Dell to help ensure integration and innovation for software solutions spanning all of Dell’s businesses. Some of Don’s recent solution focus at Dell has been on hybrid cloud management, BYOD/mobility management and security, end-to-end next generation connected security. Prior to joining Dell, Don was executive vice president and chief technology officer for CA Technologies. Don defined the technical strategy and product architecture. This included strategic technology acquisitions (e.g. 3Tera, iTKO, Hyperformix), technical guidance for innovative organic development (e.g. CA Service Operations Insight, Server Automation for Cloud) and product integration and solutions (e.g. Catalyst/Unified Service Model, Integrated Demand Management, CA Open Space). Prior to joining CA in 2008, Don was a Microsoft Technical Fellow working in the Office of the CTO and in Server and Tools Business. He worked on various projects exploring the future of enterprise software, with a special emphasis on Web services and Internet application platforms. Don began his career at IBM, where he worked for twenty years. In 2001 Don became an IBM Fellow, IBM&#039;s highest technical honor. IBM has approximately 80 IBM Fellows in the 150,000 person engineering team. Don served as chief architect for the IBM Software Group, where he focused on design issues and initiatives spanning the DB2, WebSphere, Tivoli, Lotus and Rational product families. During this time, Ferguson also worked on a number of SOA, web service and web application initiatives, specifications and standards. Don also held the title of chief architect for the WebSphere product family from its inception until becoming IBM Software Group chief architect. Don is often credited as “The Father of WebSphere.” Don earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University. He has contributed to approximately 30 technical journal and conference publications, and has more than a dozen patents. The Columbia Engineering Alumni Association of Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University named Don a 2013 recipient of The Egleston Medal. The award is an annual recognition of one or two alumni for “distinguished achievement in engineering or applied science.” </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company-logo field-type-image field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Logo:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://cloudslam.org/sites/default/files/styles/round_70/public/Dell_Logo_0.png?itok=QztxE-BF" width="72" height="72" alt="" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-headshot field-type-image field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Headshot Photo:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><img typeof="foaf:Image" src="http://cloudslam.org/sites/default/files/styles/round_180/public/don_0.jpg?itok=-G32SNcK" width="172" height="172" alt="" /></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-postal field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Postal Address:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Toronto</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-room field-type-list-text field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Emerald Ballroom</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-timeslot field-type-datetime field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><span class="date-display-single" property="dc:date" datatype="xsd:dateTime" content="2014-06-04T11:20:00-07:00">Wednesday, June 4, 2014 - 11:20</span></div></div></div> Wed, 21 May 2014 20:15:00 +0000 811 at http://cloudslam.org Three Degrees of Mediation: Challenges and Lessons in building cloud-agnostic systems http://cloudslam.org/cloudcomputingconference/three-degrees-mediation-challenges-and-lessons-building-cloud-agnostic <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>The paper is based on the work I have done while working as a Technology Principal and Cloud Innovation Lead at Global Technology Consulting Firm. It describes unique challenges encountered during the development of a Cloud Broker. Designed to provide seamless and uniform user experience as well as additional enterprise-level capabilities over a broad range of public and private cloud platforms, the broker had to work with a wide variety of diverse cloud APIs. And, in order to allow rapid onboarding of new target clouds, we had to design the system to operate in a generic cloud-agnostic way. We have reviewed and tried quite a few of available cloud integration technologies, both commercial and open-source as a foundation for our cloud abstraction and mediation layer. Couple seemed to be a good choice and, in theory, should have served all our needs, but in the course of development we found that the problem was far more complex than we (and the rest of the market) had anticipated. As we were building our system, we discovered that there was not just one, but 3 different levels of mediation required to build a truly cloud-agnostic solution: syntactic, semantic and idiosyncratic and even the best off-the-shelf solution will not be able to give us that last two out of the box. The final part of the presentation describes the architecture that allows to realize our goals and build the universal broker.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">IaaS</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/cloud-broker" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Cloud Broker</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/tags/cloud-integration" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Cloud Integration</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/tags/mediation" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Mediation</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Alex</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Maclinovsky</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Principal Engineer</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Sears Holding</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Alex is a Principal Engineer at Sears Online. The talk will explain how to design the datacenter, business operations, and applications around the cloud model of IT so that you can achieve an extreme improvement in IT’s scalability while also significantly lowering operational expenses.</p> <p>Principles of scale<br /> * Building the cloud hierarchically to avoid bottlenecks<br /> * Simplifying cloud networks by flattening them and having a more flexible network isolation model<br /> * Decoupling unrelated concepts such as broadcast domains from tenant isolation<br /> * Scaling out services horizontally to eliminate bottlenecks and single points of failure</p> <p>Automation for operational efficiency<br /> * Zero-touch installation of cloud nodes<br /> * Self-healing control plane that ensures a constantly available API without heavy administrator interaction<br /> * Automation of placement of newly provisioned resources based on infrastructure tagging, end user demands, and administrative policy</p> <p>Organizational efficiency<br /> * Eliminating red tape through self-service of compute, storage, and networks – making sure that tenants can be their own administrators from business logic to network topology, to application management<br /> * Multi-layer delegation – distribute authority and drive decisions on access to the lowest level possible so that decisions made by the people with the actual responsibility for the data, the applications, and the business results<br /> * Cross-tenant collaboration – Enable cloud tenants to work together securely, quickly, and without the need for arbitration by the cloud administrator<br /> * Decoupling roles – Make sure that any role – cloud administrator, tenant administrator, and end user can do their work without the need to wait on work from another role to proceed. Have end users work within predefined constraints but have complete freedom within those boundaries.</p> <p>Application architecture<br /> * Stateless scale-out applications – Not all applications take advantage of the cloud. By eliminating state from the bulk of the application instances and by scaling out applications, you can decouple the operation of the application from the internals of the infrastructure, freeing the application administrator to manage the applications without assistance from the cloud administrator</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/54" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">efficiency</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/466" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Scalability</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">IaaS</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/4" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">cloud</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/37" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Networking</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/125" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Automation</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/146" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Architecture</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Jay</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Judkowitz</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Director of Product Management</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Nimbula</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Jay Judkowitz runs product management at Nimbula, a leading cloud software startup. However for all the benefits that each of these solutions can bring an organization, each faces real—but avoidable—limitations when used in isolation. On one hand IaaS requires too much configuration to offer the greatest benefit for increasingly agile development teams. At the same time PaaS doesn’t offer the customization and granular management IT needs to manage highly complex or legacy systems.</p> <p>In order to maximize business agility, the next generation of cloud solutions must be optimized to support the complete app lifecycle for both new and legacy systems—from lightweight web interfaces to mission-critical, production applications. In practice this means a development, testing, and production environment that enables both PaaS’ ease of development while still including IaaS’ strong management capabilities and support for legacy applications. </p> <p>The potential implementations of such an environment range from a cross-vendor IaaS-to-PaaS connection and management layer to a single provider running both IaaS and PaaS in a single unified platform. These next-generation implementations would allow developers to test and deploy to PaaS while IT retains the ability to port any apps to IaaS that require higher levels of control and configuration. All applications regardless of underlying systems and infrastructure could be managed through a single interface with uniform SLA criteria and administrative functions such as billing.</p> <p>In this presentation, the speaker will discuss the current state of IaaS and PaaS integration—including insights regarding IaaS and PaaS adoption in the enterprise, sample use cases, and an exploration of the future of “as a service” cloud solutions. Additionally, the speaker will cover real-world customer implementation scenarios and demonstrate how this new cloud model is transforming their IT and business operations.</p> <p>Attendees will come away from the presentation with a solid understanding about the benefits and limitations of both IaaS and PaaS, and will be equipped to begin planning an integrated cloud solution that meets their business needs.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-keywords field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Keywords:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/13" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">paas</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/14" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">IaaS</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/257" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">devops</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/458" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">itops</a></div><div class="field-item even"><a href="/taxonomy/term/312" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Enterprise</a></div><div class="field-item odd"><a href="/taxonomy/term/378" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel">Applications</a></div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-spfname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker First Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Bryan</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-splname field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Last Name:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Thompson</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-jobtitle field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Job Title:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Vice President of Services</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-company field-type-text field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker&#039;s Company Name/Affiliation:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">Tier 3</div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-bio field-type-text-long field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Speaker Bio:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even">As vice president of services, Bryan Thompson oversees the teams responsible for pre and post-sales technical support and professional services.
